During emergencies like fire alarm system, as per protocol the electrical system of the building is shut down ( because most of the fire are due to electrical short circuits ). This also switch off the lighting in the building. This escalates the situation more and can be dangerous for people trapped as they cannot see. Emergency lighting provide temporary lighting in the area when main lights are switch off.
